Fit & Well: World Heart Day
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) —September 29th is “World Heart Day”, a time to raise awareness and mobilize action against cardiovascular disease.
Cardiovascular disease is the world’s number one killer, according to the World Heart Federation, .
More than 20 million people die every year by a heart attack, stroke, heart failure, and other conditions affecting the heart or blood vessels.
The good new is experts say 80% of these premature deaths are preventable.
Dr. Joseph Rosenblum, a cardiologist for St. Luke’s, talked about how to lower your risk for cardiovascular disease.
“Probably the cornerstone of prevention is diet and exercise, and there’s a lot of talk lately about how you should avoid processed foods,” Dr. Rosenblum said. “You should try to eat a basic, more elemental diet, such as a Mediterranean diet that’s high in monosaturated fats like olive oil, smoking, and going to your doctor for preventive health measures. Make sure your blood pressure’s okay. Make sure that your cholesterol is where it should be.”
You can celebrate “World Heart Day” this Sunday by walking, running or biking a heart shape where you live.
