TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — Helping to improve the lives of others can also help a person improve their own health. That’s the focus of this week’s Fit and Well.

A study in the American Journal of Preventative Medicine found that people volunteering at least 100 hours a year saw positive health impacts. That can include reduced risk of physical limitations, higher physical activity, and better psychological outcomes than people who do not volunteer.

Volunteering can also help people expand their social interaction and practice social skills with others.

St. Luke’s Hospital Volunteer Coordinator Brandi Morgenson is planning a volunteer expo.

“There’s a bunch of us within our community that rely on volunteers,” Morgenson said. “South Central Community Action relies on volunteers to make food boxes to help build homes. Other hospices require also need volunteers to sit with their patients. It’s just important that we get out into the community and help our community.”

Anyone looking to volunteer in the Magic Valley is invited to attend.

The expo will be held on Sept. 20 at the Department of Health and Welfare Building in Twin Falls from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
