Fit & Well: National Breastfeeding Month
TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — August is National Breastfeeding Month. There are many health benefits when it comes to breastfeeding for you and your baby.
Such as fewer illnesses for babies, fewer problems for moms with breast cancer and even less of a chance for babies to have type 1 diabetes.
Recommendations for women breastfeeding is for the baby to be breastfed for the first six months, and then after 12 months, they can choose to continue or to stop.
Heather Wangeman, a Lactation Consultant at St. Luke’s, discussed how moms can prepare for breastfeeding.
“Preparation would be things like going to a class,” Wangeman said. “We have class here at St. Luke’s that is really good, and there’s also an online class that they can register for. If they can’t get to a class, then going online and reading there’s a lot of good information out there about breastfeeding, but being prepared ahead of time of what to expect can make a big difference.”
Some breastfeeding moms also have a deeper bond and connection with that child.
St. Luke’s next breastfeeding class is Thursday, Aug. 22, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.
