TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) —May is National Water Safety Month, and is set to teach families how to stay safe while playing in the water.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 11 people die from unintentional drowning every day.

Here are some useful water safety tips to keep you and children safe: Keep children warm, they have a higher risk for hypothermia, so always keep a blanket or a towel handy. Wearing a life jacket is vital, this helps reduce the chances of drowning for children and adults.

Randy Morris, from the Twin Falls Paramedics, talks about numerous ways people can drown, “and most of them happen when people have been drinking, they’re dehydrated,” Morris said. “They’re not wearing safety equipment like a life-vest, especially if you’re out on the kayak get dehydrated, get sick and get cramps so again the way to prevent that is to be mindful of that, to make sure you’re staying hydrated to avoid alcohol, especially when it’s hot and you’re in the water.”

He also advises to keep a watchful eye on children.
