TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — The new school year is right around the corner, and the last thing students should worry about is whether they will be hungry during the day.

Nearly 9,500 students are enrolled in Twin Falls School District. With the free and reduced-cost meals they offer, a child who might have gone hungry will no longer. This also means that if some parents are unable to feed their kids, someone will.

“So we still have parents that struggle to pay for meals at school,” said Eva Craner, the District Director of Public Relations. “We have a handful of schools where students eat completely free - breakfast and lunch. And then we have a couple of schools that haven’t reached the qualification status where their meals are completely free.”

According to Eva Craner, the Twin Falls District schools that will not provide free meals include Sawtooth Elementary, Twin Falls High School, Rock Creek Elementary, Pillar Falls Elementary, O’Leary Middle School and Twin Falls Virtual School House.

However, there is still an opportunity for kids who attend these schools to receive free lunch.

“Those families can apply for free or reduced lunch prices,” Craner said. “It’s a federal program paid through federal funds, and it allows families to utilize school nutrition services at a reduced rate or free rate.”

Parents can visit the Twin Falls School District website to complete the free or reduced lunch application. They can also go to their child’s school and complete the application in person at the main office.
