TWIN FALLS, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) — For this week’s Fit and Well Idaho Reports, dry skin makes the skin look and feel rough, itchy, flaky and scaly. According to St. Luke’s, it’s a common condition that affects people of all ages.

Dry skin also known as xerosis has many causes, including cold or dry weather, sun damage, and over bathing. Dry skin is often temporary or seasonal-- you might get it only in the winter for example, or you might need to treat it long term.

Signs and symptoms of dry skin might vary based on your age, health status, skin tone, living environment and sun exposure. But a good thing is that most cases of dry skin respond well to lifestyle changes and home remedies.

“To help with dry skin it’s important to stay well hydrated, to use a good moisturizer daily, to use a good sunscreen daily, even in the winter; and to decrease your time and use of the heat and time in the bath and when you’re washing your hands,” said St. Luke’s Clinic Nurse Practitioner, Amanda Weston.

You may need help from a primary care doctor, or a doctor that specializes in skin conditions. If you’ve tried self-care steps but your signs and symptoms persist, stop by St. Luke’s Dermatology Clinic located on 714 North College Road in Suite B to book an appointment.
